Now we have what I consider to be a great way to spend an evening as a wedding photographer.  A simple, classic, Richmond wedding with two icons of my favorite town, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and The Jefferson Hotel.  This was a classic with a twist however, because Katie and Chris were such hams and so much fun to photograph that you could hardly call it a traditional affair.  Enjoy all the great moments between these two, their friends, and their families and hope you have a wonderful week.

Spring, ah.  At last you found us.  To celebrate wearing shorts for the first time in what seems like two years, here’s a great springtime session in our nation’s capital with Kate and Bobby.  From the Union Station, to the National Mall, and then down to the waterfront at Georgetown, it was a great time with conversation, laughter, and maybe just a little photography.  Oh, and Kate and Bobby were nice enough to include me in the fun.  Check out the great phone snapshot they got of me by the Capitol reflecting pool.  I love my couples!

I’m pretty sure my blog posts have absolutely nothing to do with the weather.  However, I don’t want to jinx anything so I’m posting another beautiful vineyard wedding in the warm sun in hopes that our recent luck of no snow and above freezing temperatures will stick around for a little while.   This time we head over to Keswick Vineyards, just a little east of Charlottesville, and the wedding of Ashley and Michael.  Enjoy!

I don’t know about you, but this winter has been pretty darn exhausting.  I thought it would be nice, as the temperatures creep up ever so slowly, to throw a little sunshine and warmth in to the mix by sharing this lovely Bluemont Vineyard wedding with Ashleigh and Carlin.  Enjoy the images and here’s to a quick end to the cold and on to greener things 🙂

For the second year in a row, we’ve had the honor of being selected one of the best photography studios in the state of Virginia, by Virginia Living Magazine. To our couples, their families, and all the wonderful colleagues who sing our praises and send us wonderful client after wonderful client; thank you.  It’s because of you that we are able to do what we love each and every year.

And, in the spirit of the win, we thought we’d share a 2013 retrospective.  These are just glimpses in to many of our weddings from throughout the year, a peek in to so many beautiful ceremonies, stunning venues, and happy families.  We’ll let Pinterest and all wedding blogs take cake and flower pics…this slideshow is all about the authentic moments.  If you know us then that shouldn’t surprise you 🙂  Enjoy!

Our friends at Borrowed and Blue were kind enough to feature the lovely summer wedding of Karen and Mike.  Set at Pippin Hill Farm, a personal favorite of ours, it is a simply stunning wedding for a stunning couple and we couldn’t be happier for them.

Check out the article here and make sure you go back to look at their posting on this blog which features many more moments to love.

Welcome back from the holiday season!  It’s time to get rolling on all the big things that have been happening at Don Mears Photography. The first order of business is to finally bring to light a wedding that we’ve been dying to share.  Ashley and John were married on a gorgeous day in Richmond at the historic Tuckahoe Plantation.  From the very beginning it was clear that this was going to be a wedding full of their personality and charm.  Oh, and a note to future couples.  So far, the buried bourbon bottle is 100% effective 🙂 Richmond Bride did a lovely job of highlighting all the fun details such as the wedding key lime pie, Yoder’s donut truck, and the very laid-back atmosphere of the entire day.  Check out the article here:  Richmond Bride feature. Stay warm, Richmonders, and enjoy the images!

Here’s a great affair that we were privileged to be a part of; the wedding of Dr.’s Andy Vorenberg and Jocelyn Adelman.  Talk about a right brain-left brain type of couple.  Jocelyn is a Doctor of Music and  classical violinist with the Richmond Symphony and Andy is a colorectal surgeon.   Opposites certainly do attract, but what they have in common is clearly what makes them such a great couple.  Over the course of the months between when we first met and the wedding day, I got to know them both and they shared a warmth and sense of humor that is easy to love.  Of course, those traits had to come from somewhere, so it was no surprise to find that the entire evening with their family and friends was fun, emotional, and heartwarming.  And despite the huge, beautiful Grand Ballroom and numerous guests, it was that funny and warm nature that made it all still feel so intimate.  To the Vorenberg and Adelman families, than you for taking us in and making us a part of it all even if just for one day.  To everyone else, enjoy the images!

I’ve talked in previous posts about the seasons and how they can change the mood, colors, and backdrops to a wedding day.  Well, anyone who’s lived in Virginia long enough understands that we often will change seasons based on a whim rather than the increasingly arbitrary calendar.  So, as a photographer, if you can’t shoot in the rain/cold/hail/blazing sunshine then weddings in the mid-Atlantic probably aren’t your thing.

Why do I bring this up?  Because for Nikki and P.J., their May wedding turned a little cold and a little rainy.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is that Nikki and PJ are two of the easiest going, fun loving, and genuine  couples we know.  They knew they were getting married, that they were surrounded by family and that they were about to have a fantastic party with their friends.   And honestly, when you see Nikki’s big, warm smile as she comes down the aisle towards P.J., I would have been surprised if anyone noticed the rain.

Enjoy!
